Notes from Morrow Works on design, publishing and studio practice.

Begin with evidence, not mood

The final weeks of a year can distort memory. A difficult current project may make the whole year feel unsuccessful, while one visible launch can hide months of weak process. We collect proposals, schedules, invoices, project notes and client feedback before deciding what the year meant.

Review energy alongside revenue

Financial performance matters, but equal revenue can come from very different kinds of work. We record which projects produced focus, learning and strong relationships, and which required repeated recovery. This helps us decide what kind of growth is actually sustainable.

A useful review does not merely describe the year. It changes the next decision.

Look for repeated friction

A single problem may be bad luck. The same problem across three projects is probably a system issue. We review where schedules slipped, where decisions became unclear and where the studio absorbed work that should have been scoped or priced explicitly.

Choose fewer changes

An annual review can produce a long list of improvements that compete for attention. We select one operational change, one creative ambition and one relationship to develop. Everything else remains a note until there is capacity to act on it.

A working checklist

  • What created meaningful value?
  • What repeatedly consumed unnecessary energy?
  • Which relationships should deepen?
  • What will the studio stop doing?
A useful review does not merely describe the year. It changes the next decision.
